It is with great pleasure that we introduce PORTfolio Society Release number thirteen. This limited Vintage Port Vertical is comprised of three extraordinary wines, blended and bottled exclusively for you as a member by winemaker Peter Ficklin. Compare and contrast differences in varietal makeup, contiguous harvest years and regional variations. These three exemplary Ports each stand alone and unique, different in aroma, structure, complexity and distinctiveness. Only three barrels of each Vintage Port was blended and hand-bottled, yielding about 800 bottles. Savor the complexity, texture, and depth - all the way through to the lingering finish. These wines embody the youth and structure of young Vintage Ports and you may enjoy them now or lay them down for several decades while they continue to soften and mature.
2003 Vintage Port:
(51% Souzao; 30% Touriga; 19% Tinta Madeira -- 100% Lake County) Enjoy the complex, brooding Souzao in aroma and flavor with loads of dark berry character and hints of chocolate, coffee and menthol. With additional bottle age, these flavors will continue to evolve and slowly build layer upon layer of subtle attributes for you to eventually partake. 2003 provided a later than normal harvest with decreased yields, both increasing the concentration and intensity of flavor. (750 ml.)
2004 Vintage Port:
(45% Souzao; 29% Touriga; 19% Tinta Madeira; 7% Tinta Cao -- 100% Madera) This Vintage Port reflects a softness as the result of the Tinta Cao laid over a foundation of Souzao. Brighter notes of raspberry and cherry predominate in aroma and flavor and the unique fragrance is reminiscent of the perfume associated with the crush of ripe, fresh Tinta Madeira. The 2004 crop provided average yields, about 4 tons/acre, which contributes significantly to both character and flavor intensity. (750 ml.)
2005 Vintage Port:
(56% Touriga; 21% Tinta Madeira; 15% Souzao; 9% Tinta Cao -- 69% Madera and 31% Lake County) Ripe plum and earthy aromas entice and draw you in while subtle complexities of black cherry and ripe blackberry slowly open and reveal their fullness. Complete with a rich and chewy finish, this Vintage Port will be a favorite for years. With crop yields in excellent ranges (less than 6 tons/acre), the harvest of 2005 was on time for once in California, providing optimum maturity and great potential for Vintage Ports. (750 ml.)
