1980 Vintage Port:
This is the first Vintage Port I made, after several years of apprenticing and working with my father, David Ficklin. After two years in barrels the wine was bottled in April of 1983 and has been cellared in the winery library for over eighteen years. This rare wine was aged inside the original adobe building, where temperatures remain cool and constant. Recently recorked, it is certainly ready to enjoy now, and it will continue to age and develop slowly, under proper storage conditions. Decanting will be necessary, as the wine has thrown some sediment. Only three hundred and forty bottles were held for additional age from the original release in 1988.
Aged 15 Years Tawny Port:
Unlike Vintage Ports, which develop their character from extended time in a bottle, Tawny Ports spend their entire lives in wood barrels. During the first several years the rich, deep garnet hue is lost and the wine develops a “tawny” color. The slowed process of wood aging and evaporation creates an intensity of flavor and character. This Tawny Port consists of wines blended from the 1984, 1985 and 1986 Vintages, each with a full fifteen years of barrel age. Only 120 bottles were produced especially for PORTfolio Society members.
Adagio Port Blanc:
This lighter style of White Port has the fresh fruit taste of apricots and subtle hints of nuttiness, a characteristic of the Palamino grape variety. It is Ficklin’s first White Port and has already become a family and tasting room favorite. We enjoy it before dinner as an aperitif or after a meal with a fruit tart or cheesecake. Only 50 cases were produced.
