2006 Merlot La Mattina Ranch: The grapes for this wine came from a neighboring vineyard. The LaMattina family has been friends and neighbors with the Ficklin's for several generations. The two vineyards being side-by-side, share the same soil. This Madera soil produces Merlot grapes that exhibit all the aromas of red-currant, boysenberry, and a hint of toasted almond so common in great Merlots, but this wine also has a loamy-earth teaser in the finish. It's a vibrant, plum-red wine that would pair excellently with mild cheeses, bruschetta, & roasted chicken.
