PORTfolio Society Release Number 15 is a limited and exclusive offering of three Colheita Ports: 2000, 2001 and 2002. Compare, contrast and enjoy as each of the three wines show similarity, yet each one stands alone and unique, different in aroma, structure, complexity and distinctiveness of flavor. Slowly and carefully wood aged, only five barrels of each wine were blended and hand-bottled, yielding about 100 cases of each. Winemaker Peter Ficklin personally selected and blended the wines that were bottled solely for the PORTfolio Society.
2000 Colheita Tawny Port:
Harvest was right on schedule, and eight individual lots of wine were produced that year. Two exceptional lots were barreled down, and then recently blended and bottled for this wine. The 2000 Colheita is 85% Tinta Madeira, and the flavors and aromas reflect the varietal softness and fullness of character. In the barrels for seven years, it is now showing complex aromas of cognac, wood and dried fig. Souzao and Touriga were blended with the Tinta Madeira, as the fruit has slowly developed the dynamics of a true barrel-aged Port. (750ml)
2001 Colheita Tawny Port:
The 2001 harvest was about two weeks late, yielding a little extra hang-time, gently increasing the concentration and flavor. Separate and individual varietal lots were blended and bottled, resulting in a wine of 65% Touriga, 18% Tinta Madeira, 12% Tinta Cao and 4% Souzao. Complex and enticing aromas of dried apricot, vanilla, honey and hints of anise leap out of the glass. Extended barrel age refines the full and soft Touriga, leading into a lingering, warm finish. The Tinta Madeira and Tinta Cao contribute additional softness and complexity, which just begs for another sip. (750ml)
2002 Colheita Tawny Port:
Comprised of 50% Tinta Madeira, 41% Touriga, 9% Souzao, this Colheita truly exemplifies the Tawny character. Six years of barrel age bring out and magnify the appeal of the Touriga variety, as flavors of coffee and roasted nuts abound and surround the caramel warmth. Again, three exceptional varietal lots were barreled, blended and hand-bottled for this special release. (750ml)
